Exploring Ruston’s Alleys: A Louisiana Photography Journey in Color

If you’re a ShutterCraft 101 subscriber, you likely caught last week’s Louisiana Wandering: Ruston’s Alleyway Charm newsletter.

I’ve mostly shared black-and-white images in the Louisiana Wandering newsletter series and will likely continue to do so.

However, when I am out photographing things, I capture many color images but hardly share many of them outside social media (sometimes).

This is the first official article on the Louisiana Wandering website and I have decided to use this opportunity and share many of the color pictures from this particular outing.

One of the main reasons I created Louisiana Wandering, with the intent of publishing the majority of my photography content here, is because of the limitations of the newsletter (and email in general).

Email is not the ideal medium for photography-heavy content. Due to image size constraints and other factors, the content can be cut off, making for a less-than-ideal reading and viewing experience.

Perhaps most importantly though, I started Louisiana Wandering because I wanted to create and share a body of work around a centralized theme.

With a website, I can show up in (Google) search engine results, while making these visual stories more accessible to those interested in exploring Louisiana’s hidden urban treasures.

Which doesn’t seem to be as easy for email newsletters based on my understanding.

For this particular outing in North Louisiana’s downtown Ruston area, I wanted to revisit the alleys and corridors, many of which I haven’t trod since my youth.

I put a ‘camera constraint’ on myself to shoot in a 50(ish) mm field of view.

I knew this would present its challenges, especially in the more confined spaces found in some of Ruston’s alleys.

Such a constraint makes one consider the framing and composition of the shot. You can only zoom in and out with your feet so much in a small-town Louisiana alley so you have to be creative to capture the scene you want.

Louisiana Wandering is a reader-supported publication. You can support the publication with a virtual coffee today. Thank you!
