While riding back roads on Easter Sunday morning, I passed a country church with an empty parking lot. It struck me as odd that there were no services on Easter.
The church had that old look Iām always drawn to. Worn, but not neglected. Just coming into its years is all.
I proceeded down to the next available turnaround and made my way back. I pulled over at the far corner of the parking lot near the ditch and got out to take a few pictures.
Not long after, I noticed an elderly gentleman riding a golf cart down the road towards me and thought to myself, “Here goes… He is gonna run me off.”
Turns out, quite the opposite happened, actually. I introduced myself and told the gentleman that I was just taking pictures of the church and was curious why there were no services on Easter Sunday.
He explained the last preacher couldn’t really pull away from his full-time job (totally understandable)to devote enough time to it to build up a congregation.
After a bit of small talk, the kind sir invited me to stay and continue doing my thing, as he was going inside to use the oven to bake some taters. š
I love discovering and learning about these types of stories. Oftentimes, just meeting people and engaging in friendly conversation is the best part of riding the back roads.
